Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that develops during pregnancy. It occurs when the hormones produced by the placenta interfere with the body's ability to use insulin effectively, leading to high blood sugar levels.
Gestational diabetes typically develops during the second or third trimester of pregnancy and usually goes away after delivery. However, women who develop gestational diabetes are at an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life.
